Stay legal before you send a single message

The basics every local business owner needs to know about SMS marketing compliance.

Written consent required

You must have explicit written opt-in before sending any marketing SMS. Verbal consent is not sufficient. Collect consent at point-of-sale, on a sign-up form, or via a keyword opt-in campaign.

Quiet hours: 8am–9pm local time

TCPA prohibits sending marketing texts before 8:00 AM or after 9:00 PM in the recipient's local time zone. ReturnFlowHQ enforces this automatically.

STOP must work immediately

Any customer who replies "STOP", "CANCEL", "UNSUBSCRIBE", "END", or "QUIT" must be removed from your send list immediately. Honor opt-outs within 10 business days (best practice: instantly).

HELP must return support info

Replying "HELP" must trigger a response with your business name and a support contact or opt-out instructions. ReturnFlowHQ handles this automatically.

Identify your business

Every message must include your business name or make it clear who is sending. Ambiguous sender identity violates FCC guidelines and erodes trust.

A2P 10DLC registration

Commercial SMS sent from application-to-person (A2P) routes requires carrier registration since 2023. Unregistered traffic is filtered or blocked. ReturnFlowHQ manages 10DLC registration as part of onboarding.

Alcohol, gambling, cannabis, and certain financial offers face additional carrier restrictions. These categories require special registration and may be filtered regardless.

Opt-in confirmations should state approximate message frequency (e.g., "Msg frequency varies. Reply STOP to cancel"). This is required by carrier best practices.
